Breaking News!! 11/22/08
Sometimes you
fall.a In Cross-Country, falling can happen at the most inopportune
time. When you fall, get up, finish the race, and sometimes you
will win... That's what happened to 43-year old Mark Hixson from
Simsbury. Mark not only won, but he lead the Hartford Track Club
Men to an Open and a Masters team victory. For the women, Brittany Heninger took the lead early. Beth Kraseman took control just before the 2-mile mark and continued to pull away for a solid victory. Results for the 9th Annual Hartford Track Club 8K Cross-Country Challenge are posted. This was the third and final race in the USATF/CT XC Grand Prix. I will have team scores and a whole bunch of photos posted within a few days.
11/18/08 The USATF/CT Junior Olympic XC results are posted. Photos from the Age Before Beauty 5k Cross-Country Race are posted. This was race #2 in the USATF/CT XC Grand Prix. In the Mens Open; Athlete Foot/ New Balance was 1st with 20 points, Hartford Track Club 2nd with 43 points, and the Mohegan Striders 3rd with 61 points. In the Men's Master competition; AFNB was 1st with 8 points, HTC 2nd with 16 points and Mohegan 3rd with 24 points. Hartford Track Club took 1st place in the Women's open and masters competition. The third and final race in the USATF/Connecticut Cross-Country Grand Prix Series is this Saturday at 10:00 AM in West Hartford. Download an app. The race is open to everyone. After two races the series stands at: Open Men Mohegan Striders 1 + 1 = 2 Athletes Foot/New Balance 0 + 2 = 2 Hartford Track Club 0 + 1.5 = 1.5 Master Men Mohegan 1 + 1 = 2 Athletes Foot/New Balance 0 + 2 = 2 Hartford Track Club 0 + 1.5 = 1.5 Open Women Hartford Track Club 0 + 1 = 1 Master Women Hartford Track Club 0 + 1 = 1 The 2008 USATF/CT Team Championship Title will be decided this Saturday at the Hartford Track Club's 8K Cross-Country Challange. The individual standings show Patrick Swift from the Mohegan Striders as the strong contender for both the Open and Master's 2008 Men's State Champion. While Brittany Heninger from the Woodbridge Running Company looks like a shoe in...for the Open 2008 Women's State Champion, defending master's champion, Cheryl Cunningham from the Hartford Track Club might have a shot at a repeat for 2008. The big question is, what shirt will Way Hedding be wearing for this Grand Finale? 11/16/08 Cross-Country Season is in full gear. There's one more USATF/CT XC Grand Prix event.
John Citrelli lead the race from start to finish. He missed the course record by 1 second. The Athletes Foot/New Balance Team edges the Hartford Track Club in both the open and masters men team competition. Despite running 3.5 miles, Brittany Henninger lead the women's race while the Hartford Track Club women took both open and masters team competitions.

The race also features the USATF/CT Open and Master's Team Competition. USATF/CT teams can win prize money! Run the race and then stick around to watch the kids. You can download an app from the Race Application page and you can register at the race. Did you know that the use of a GPS device during a race is against the rules? 11/9/08

Leading the women in a close race was Brittany Heninger over Kathy Lundin. The Mohegan Striders won the open and masters team event. They are taking home the cash. Dempsey and Niedeck ran neck-and-neck through the first half of the race. Dempsey gradually pulled away and set a new course record. Former champion and past record holder, Margaret Banker made the drive down from Beverly, Mass. to earn a narrow victory over Torrington local, Jackie Scoville. Former Hog Champion, Josh Adams lead Jeffrey McDermott through 1-Mile in 5:30. McDermott took the lead at four and lead Adams by about 30 seconds through 5 in 29:30. Adams maintaned contact through 10 but McDermott had some gas left in the tank to pull out the victory. Meanwhile, the women played musical chairs through the first seven miles. It was the 2008 People's Forest Connecticut Trail State Champion, Tracey Dickey, who seperated herself from the rotation. Dickey held the victory as the 2007 Trail State Champion, Cheryl Cunningham, was pressing a final surge. Fred Hudak continues to have a superlative running season with a solid victory in the 60+ division. Great turnout for what turned out to be a fairly dry day. This was the first year for the Hartford Track Club as acting race director. Good job. Thank you to all the volunteers, Anola for the t-shirt design, Kelly for the home-made food, and HTC Race Director Paul Wai. I like the Hog Trophy! Results and photos are posted. 9/26/08

Wether you are a beginner, a once-in-a-while jogger, or a grizzled veteran; it still seems relevant today.
So you have done all the proper training, you've read all the right books, studied all the race archives, and put in the hours of dedication required to reach your target race goal. The big day arrives. No aches, no pains; you're rested and well prepared to take on the challenge. The gun goes off and shortly thereafter you realize that the race you've spent all this time targeting is quickly turning out to be a disaster.A spectacular masterpiece of lost time, shattered dreams, and a performance that leaves you in a great depression. Just as every runner has his day, every runner will experience a bad day. Some runners experience the bad day more than others. And sometimes the bad day is just too overwhelming to shake off.Life isn't all candy and roses and learning how to cope with a bad race is strictly something that requires on the job training. There is no quick and easy answer in how to cope with the pain, anxiety, and disappointments that come with a bad race. Establish an action plan. When you find yourself adrift in the throws of a tough performance, set some very short and specific goals (i.e. Run to the next telephone pole, walk to the next telephone pole, then run the next telephone pole).Once into your recovery plan, try a gradual expansion of the plan (i.e. walk one telephone pole leg then run the next two legs, then the next three, etc.).The point of this exercise is to not give up and to get your head back into the race.Unless faced with injury, finishing the race under such adverse conditions can become a bright spot in the aftermath. It's very painful getting a ride back to the finish. Running is a fine line between composure and breakdown.Once the athlete is in good physical condition, running the race becomes nearly a ninety percent psychological effort.Every runner has his or her own way of coping with the anxiety prior to the race. Some runners are very talkative during their warm up period. Some runners become very quite and distant as they begin to focus on the task at hand.A certain level of confidence is mandatory. Many runners spend time in distress and doubt prior to the gun.For some of these runners, this has become their way of coping.Going into the race with less than great expectations is their way of relieving the tension and avoiding disappointment in a mediocre performance. I believe that a runner that has made the effort, demonstrated a forward
progression, and is clear and free of injury, should expect great things! When
the great things don't materialize and the performance actually regresses,
the athlete needs to try to take some positive thoughts away from the
performance, no matter how bad it was. This is how the athlete can begin
recovery. This is how you can break out of the depression.Take time (a
half day for every bad mile). The grieving process takes time. It's perfectly
normal to be down after a bad race.Try not to let it linger.Your friends
will appreciate your depression and like you a lot better if you try
to stay upbeat. Get yourself up and training again for a different distance,
a new target race with adjusted goals, and remember that one bad race
does not mean that you are a bad runner. This is how you become a veteran
runner. This is how you succeed at life. 7/18/08 It was a busy week in Litchfield. The Night of Miles was Tuesday and the XC Series was Thursday.
